A woman who spends 30 minutes to an hour lifting weights and not taking steroids is not going to develop anything ressembling body-builder muscles. A little muscle on a woman looks extremely good. and It's functional! Muscle also helps burn calories which keeps weight down.
Finally, to women afraid of muscle, hold your 'skinny' arm out and shake it. Is that flappy bit of skin really better than a minisicule amount of muscle?

I see it all the time, I know several women who want to be skinny, but have no muscle. I just want to know why. I don't care whether they look good to me, I don't think they should either, if you think that has anything to do with my question, you're reading it wrong.

When I say steriods, I am addressing the excuse I hear from most women about doing any weights. I am saying if you don't take steriods and if you don't workout 8 hours a day you do not have to worry about developing those types of muscles.

Women are under the false impression that they'll look like Schwarzenegger after a little working out. Not true!
I agree with you completely.

Just to clarify, the question is "Why are women afraid of having a little muscle on their arms"?
I don't think it's fear more than it is excessively hard to create and maintain those muscles. Short of having children and carrying them constantly or going to the gym everyday, women don't have a need for lifting heavy object in their daily lives. Women aren't built that way. We are made to have strong legs and strong lower torsos.
Why are men afraid of a little muscle on their legs? A lot of men have strong shoulders and arms, but have "chicken legs". Because developing muscle on mens legs is more difficult.
Think of it this way.. If you were to look at a woman a draw a triangle over her the base o the triangle would be around her upper thighs, or hips. If you were to look at a man to do the same thing, the base of the triangle would be at his shoulders.
What the triangle means is how men and women are built from the normally strongest to the weakest. What you'll find is that men are top heavy with muscle and women are bottom heavy. Look at body builders, men always have large chests and arms, where the legs aren't as large, and women always have large legs, and smaller arms.
There is no fear, it is mostly other excuses. Such as no time, no gym membership, no children, no need.
As for being afraid of large muscles in men, well that might have something to do with security. Some women don't like men with big muscles because it scares them to think that this person could and would easily overpower them at a moments notice. Then again it could also jsut be as simple and physical preference. Some like non toned muscles. Some like bulging muscles, others are in between.
I hope that answers a little bit.

If you find a woman who is as you say afraid of a little muscle, she may be concerned it would detract from her femininity. Each of has a measurable amount of opposing sex hormones in our body, Males have estrogen, women have testosterone. When a woman engages in strenuous weight training excercies the natural store of testosterone(responsible for sex drive among other things) increases and she can develop traits like a deepend voice, or facial hair. While neither of these things will happen during a normal workout, when taken to the level of a professional weight trainer the results can be, how shall I say, a bit more extreme.

Why do guys always generalize that women are afraid of muscles? I'm a marathon runner and lift weights in order to get toned. I'm certainly not afraid of having definition on my muscles.

Fancy an arm wrestle?
Oh and btw muscle is heavier than fat so how can it possibly keep weight down? especially on a skinny woman?
Sounds like you need to put some muscle on in the brain department.
