I am going to have an internship this summer and can not bring my horse with me. I don't want her to sit all summer in the pasture and be horrible for me in fall, so I want to hire someone to ride her a couple times a week. Questions are at the end.
Background: She will be at my parent's house- outdoor arena, pasture board, other horses to ride occasionally as well. Horse is a 17.2h draft mare. Relatively quiet and sensitive and is shown 1st level dressage. Everything will be provided- she doesn't need training I just need someone to work her.
What I want in a rider is basic dressage knowledge (leg pressure and direct rein mainly) and unafraid of big horses to ride her two times a week (more if they want, but unpaid). It is just for 3 months.
How much should I pay them a month? how to go about finding one (we have all western by my parents)? examples of contracts (leasing ones maybe?) Anything I should add to requirements?
Thanks in advance!

Oh, she is my baby, so I will be personally interviewing everyone. And getting a trainer to ride her 5 days a week is about $350 a month around here.

I am not dismissing a western rider- but they are few and far between in this area that actually use leg pressure- 99% of them just get on, kick and go with their back hollow and head strung up. Local speed shows are a big hit. Reining riders I have respect for.

If you want someone cheap, my best guess is mabey go to a local riding center and look a teenager in higher advanced classes that doesn't have a horse. You can also post it in the bulliten board in the office. Definatly interview all of the people, and see how they ride and if they know the basics on horse care. If they are serious about riding lessons then you will have someone that loves horses just mabey cannot afford one. Good luck

i think it depends where you live the level of experience of the trainer. here where i live my horses can be ridden for about a hour for 25$, even if you had a western rider they use the basics same a dressage so i don't think they can mess you baby up to much, i prefer western and use direct neck reining and leg pressure same as anyone else. so i wouldn't just dismiss a western rider based on that, they may have trained in both at some time and chose western as the main riding method. even if they put western saddle on i don't think it would throw off a horse of that size.
good luck

Pay them? I thought people would pay the owner to lease.

Well, no more than 150.00.
