you have a resource hog of some type. It could be your anti-virus scanning or updating, it could be a virus or spyware on your system or you could just have a new program that hogs the resources that freeze your system.
If your sure it's not a regular program doing the damage, my suggestion is to go to cnet.com and download a anti-virus anti-spyware program..you'd be surpised what you'll find!
I actually run 2 anti-virus/anti-spyware programs and still some tend to slip by.

You've re installed Windows? Before you check your hardware it could be a software issue like your anti virus software or certain applications. They can freeze if they are relatively new programs if you have an older PC. If it is a hardware issue you could always run Chkdisk by going to Start - Run- Type CMD which is the command prompt and type CHKDISK to check your HDD for any bad Sectors if there are any bad sectors then get a new HDD. Your CPU or Motherboard could be the problem, What CPU do you have and do you have another motherboard to test it on??? Is the Graphics card powerful enough for your machine?? The freezing i personally think is either a CPU/Motherboard or Software Problem But i would still check your CPU on another motherboard or take your computer to a computer repair shop and ask them to test your CPU because it could be your motherboard. Other then that check to see if your Hardware components are compatible with one and other

its not your hard drive. Your hard drive would make a noise if its going bad. Dust is an issue, but not with freezing. It can cause fans to stop working, and make your CPU chip burn up, but again, this wouldn't cause freezing. Its either some sort of spyware, virus, or your just need to upgrade your RAM. RAM is the #1 factor in performance. Anytime you load anything and keep it open in Windows weather it be a program, or a background application thats needed to run WIndows, it uses RAM. I am willing to bet its the Ram issue. Try adding another 512 stick, they sell for around 80-90 bucks depending on your area. Its the most cost efficient way to boost a computers performance. Hope this helped.

You might have a virus or spyware. Make sure you run all of those.

Is your computer making a loud noise? If so, your hard drive might be in the process of crashing.

As the other person said, backup your data.

You may need to clean up your hard drive:
Go to the start menu, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk clean up.

I've got broadband internet and a gig of ram, and sometimes depending on what and how many things I'm doing, mine freezes for a few seconds also. I attribute it to overload.

If it hangs for only a few seconds I wouldn't worrry about it. It's when it hangs and never recovers until you reboot that kills me.

could be out of memory,
like if you are running to many programs

press control-alt-delete ( all together)
this will bring up your task manager,
see what programs are running
if you have too many, then there is not enough memory for everthing all at once.

if that is the case,
run msconfig,
click startup,
and uncheck some of the programs you don't need to have running all the time

Mine was doing that this morning too. It could be that your computer was automatically downloading a windows update while you where trying to use it. That's happened to mine... that and I had just plugged up my iPod to recharge and the computer was trying to start iTunes.

Dust can be your culpret, try blowing it out... heat from a dusty comp often causes freezing, if it continues your hard drive might be going bad! Make sure you back everything up just in case!

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
