I guess this depends on the kind of teaching you do. In my case, I teach English conversation, so having a topic to discuss really helps. These are the 3 things I try to find out:

1) Hobbies. It's good to know their interests, and if I talk about their interests, they feel more confident and interested in speaking.
2) Motivation for studying. It gives me an idea about what they want to get out of their studies, so I can mould the lessons to best teach them.
3) Job. Some of my students are studying because of their job. This helps determine what kind of language they need to learn. Some need business English. Others need more casual, general interest English.

Do your students really understand the lessons?
Do they find you boring?
Do they have family problems at home which will affect their studies?
