I heard on TV yesterday (Dr. Sears was on Dr. Phil) that you should wait until the baby is at least 6 months old. They said that it had recently been discovered that giving an infant solids of any kind before than can cause problems later in life. Which is just great because both of my boys had rice cereal in milk and whatnot at like 3 or 4 months.

The average baby can start cereal after four months but even that is the earliest time.
if he/she can hold up head
sit up with little support.
start small at first, about 1 teaspoons to two tablespoons of formula or breastmilk. You want to see if the baby can swallow, and has any allerigies to the cereal. Its best to try after a bottle so the baby will have more patience to taste it.

the doctors say wait until the child is at least 6 months old. it is suppose to help control hunger and food intake to keep the child from being overweight. but most children won't wait that long before they are gonna want something more filling. i started adding a little rice cereal to my daughter's bottle at about 3 months old and she is perfectly healthy and she's not overweight either. just use your good judgement, if your child acts like s/he is hungry all the time even after they ate then just add a little. then as they get bigger and hungrier; add little by little to fit their feeding needs.

The doctors suggest at 6 months but I started my 2 kids at 3 months. They are both in their 30's. No obesity or allergies. Very healthy.

Reports state to not start earlier than 4 month unless th doctor tells you otherwise.
There are studies that have shown that kids that were introduced to solids (cereal) too early, were at higher risk for juvenile (sp?)diabetes.

My pediatrician said to start at 4 months old. She said to make it very thin and with breastmilk, formula or water but to feed it with a spoon. Babies over eat and gain weight when they eat cereal in a bottle. this also strs to get them used to spoon feeding so you can start stage one fruits and veggies at 5 or 6 months.

At around 4 months. It really depends on the baby. You will know when he/she wants more. Do not put it in the bottle and make the whole bigger, as someone had suggested above me. Enjoy your baby, congrats and good luck
