I don't know. There are bottles specifically made for doing so. Mothers have been doing it for decades. I did it with my three and they all grew up fine. There are choking hazards when they are too small for something thicker than they are ready for, but rice cereal can be thinned way down. I would not give it to a newborn. Their intestines and stomach are not ready to deal with it yet, but around four to six months I started introducing cereal to my children.

I would certainly not make it a habit once they reach the spoon feeding age or you would have problems teaching them to start to utilize the spoon.

Nope. My baby started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks (lucky me) but I was worried that was too long for an empty belly. Her peditrician said not to wake her for night feedings, or we would get into some bad habits. She did tell me I could put rice cereal in her first and last bottles of the day. My baby has been having a cereal bottle at bedtime ever since (she is now 9 months) and has been absolutely fine.

The cereal dissolves in the bottle. The formula is then thicker, but it is not a choking hazard. just be sure to shake the bottle really really well.

There is no proof that it does and if it does why does Enfamil makde a formula with rice already added to it???? Why are there nipples on the shelves with a Y cut for thicker formulas i.e. rice added into the formula???? I work in the NICU and this is what we recommend for babies with reflux, which most preemies when sent hom have this because their pyloric spinchter is not fully formed. This is also what was recommended to me by my doctor for my three children because they had reflux. There are a lot of doctors out there telling parents to do this, probably because there is no proof they choke on it, I have yet to see it happen.

The special nipples are for babies reflux huh...so it's dangerous to all babies except for babies with reflux. That is a double standard. It is not a hazard to babies with reflux because it is not a health hazard period. The formula is perfectly safe or else it would be pulled off the shelves whether it is for money grabbing purposes or not!!!!!!

You have to cross-cut the tip of the nipple in order for the rice to go through which poses a choking hazard , especially for young infants. I know that's the first food to give them and it helps keep them to not wake up as often for food. Always use a spoon it just takes a little practice and patience.

I definitely think that is a myth...I did it for both my kids(my mother taught me) and they were fine and slept all night..they wanted the bottle every 2 hours instead of the normal every three(I was bottle feeding)so once i added cereal in the bottle..they ate every 5 hours(they did not lose weight either) which gave me a nice long break....my kids are now 8 years old and one years old....It's not a big deal to do that...sometimes formula is just not enough but yet it's too early to feed them from a spoon..that's why i did it and once they started spoon feeding..I quit putting cereal in the bottle.

That's not completely true. I would imagine if someone went overboard and put a ton of cereal in it, that may happen. But, both of my boys had/have acid reflux. Guess what the doctor told me to do to help it? Put cereal in the bottles. But, when doing it, you don't put in enough to make it that thick. I put maybe 1 tablespoon of it in a five ounce bottle. And it really helps with the reflux. And of course, you need to watch the kid while they drink it.

because a baby who is old enough for rice cereal (6 months) is able to spoon feed.

the special nipples for feeding cereal in bottles are designed for babies with reflux.

formula companies are money grabbers. they will make a product that they know people will buy no matter if its healthy or not.

What does a baby do with a bottle of formula/milk? (common sense SHOULD tell you why it is a choking hazard)

everything is a choking hazzard for a baby. Especially if they are too young to eat themselves

my doctor advised me to put it in the bottle to keep her from throwing up everything she ate.
it worked very well.

now i can imagine if you used to much that it would make it too thick, kinda like eating mashed potatoes.
and it could stick in the throat.
