I was required to write an essay in math, using the typical style of writing and everything. I did so, turned it in, didn't get it back for a while. Later, my mom tells me she read it and laughed her but off because I guess I added a bit of humor in there I wasn't aware of, but she told me he loved it. I constantly get compliments on my writing skills, which I am obviously proud of. But, when I got my score, I wasn't all that thrilled, but i accepted it. Then I heard my teacher tell a few students who went up to get their paper that she kept theirs because they were better than most of the classes. Needless to say, I was pretty shot down. I thought I did really well on the paper. I thought I deserved a better score, and then I hear I had a bad paper! I don't know if I should ask her about it, or what. I mean, she's not even a Lit teacher! She didn't mark my paper up with corrections or anything! I wan't to talk to her, but I don't want to seem snobbish about my work.

As a former teacher, I can tell you that you should follow your mom's advice and talk to your teacher. Sometimes, you have to write in different ways for different teachers. What one teacher likes may not be the forte of another. It sounds to me that you are a creative person who operates more from the right side of the brain. Mathematicians usually operate on the left side of the brain and write in a more technical manner. Definitely talk to your teacher, after or before class. Ask her to critique your paper and advise you as to what she would like to see in your essays. Also, point out some points that you thought were good in your essay. It takes a very long time to mark a class set of essays. Perhaps she missed something. She might even raise your grade for a half mark. Teachers are there to teach and help you to learn and succeed. A good teacher would want you to come to her. If your teacher has her own agenda and insults you or won't give you any time, you should see your vice principal...at the very least, the head of the math department. Asking for assistance does not denote snobbery. Rather it means that you want to do your very best.

it was a paper on math?? wow haven't heard that one... anyhow... its doubtful the focus of the paper was on how well it was written.... I would suggest to ask her what she thought of and try not to mention "she's not even a lit teacher" ...
bc mainly it won't come across well and I think it would be more relevant if she was or wasn't an English teacher....?
Also are you bad @ math or just don't like it?

Anyhow you eventually need to accept your shortcomings with math. One of my closest friends is exceptional in English but terrible in math.... She had about the 3rd highest GPA except for her maths courses in which she had to perform loads of extra credit to compensate... she couldn't get into a okay university but into a better private school who didn't rely so much on SAT....& now she's doing great....
Good Luck....

She obviously didn't see it as your mom did.

What if you try a little experiment. Let her read yours again and ask her to tell you her opinion (keep an open mind and listen). After that tell her about your feeling about math and ask her to try and visualized you doing what you love, writing, but writing about what you hate. Let her read yours again, if her opinion doesn't changed, then there's no point on arguing with her. She's not a Lit teacher anyway, as you said.

What do you have to loose by speaking to her?

Why not, you have already done the paper. Go for it, you
may learn something. Be open about what she has to say.

Actually, it will only benefit you in the future.

good luck and go for it!
