At what age can children take cold medicine? I know there's not much you can do for small babies except the vaporizer & tylenol. Just wondering--when do children start taking cold medicine?

Jenna- I'm not looking to give a child cold medicine. I'm trying to figure out a general age when children begin to take cold medicine. If you don't know the answer to a question, why answer??

Tylenol makes a cold medicine for infants (found over-the- counter) and Pedia-Care makes a cold medicine for infants (over-the-counter, but found behind the pharmacy counter where I live due to meth. production). Other than that you can find 1 or 2 cold products for 2yrs. old and up, but it is easiest to find cold medicines for 6yrs. and up.

Also, for small babies you can use a saline nasal spray to loosen mucus, and a nasal aspirator (bulb thingies) to remove mucus. Vick's vapor rub makes a rub for babies, and a plug-in too.

If they're under 2 years(I think it is) you have to get the dosage instructions from a pediatrician. My youngest son had a really bad cold, and his pediatrician said we could give him Triaminic and gave us a chart. He was around 6 months old, by the way. So they are able to take it w/o a doctors' input probably around 2 years old. Unless of course, they have previous issues and need a doctor to help out. And it's always best to go by weight(if possible) before age.

Never give anything OTC to a child under a year without seeing a doctor first. OTC cold medication can mask other, more serious symptoms. Honestly, it's probably better to wait until they're around 2 years old for cold medicine - and even then, only do it if they're REALLY miserable.

The youngest we have given cold medicine to our children (with doctors instructions) is six months. The only people whose answer I would trust on tthis is the child's pediatrician.
