For those who received the February 2007 issue of Nintendo Power, it had a section on an eight player wii tournament. I was wondering if it is possible to use more controllers.

The controller ports are for game cube controllers. The wiimote doesn't require a controller port. Since the Wii can be updated through the net, it is possible that games will eventually allow more than 4, but I am not familar with any games that currently uses more than 4. You'd also need a really big 60in+ tv and alot of room in your living room to play simultaneosly with 8 people.

I haven't seen the Nintendo Power you mention, so I can't speak directly to that.

However, it does seem 4 wireless controllers is the limit. There are ways to work around that, though. A few of the downloadable TG16 Virtual Console games have 5-player modes. On Wii this is accomplished by using a combination of wireless Wii controllers and wired GameCube controllers.

Another, slightly more goofy, method is used by an upcoming Bust-a-Move game. Since the controls are simple, it allows for up to eight players by using four sets of remotes and nunchuks. Each player uses a single remote or a single nunchuk, so they've got to sit in pretty close proximity tho whoever they're attached with.
