This pic is from a site connected with geography ... the image caught was probably accidental

The childlike face embedded in the foreground tree defintely stands out. I noticed it right away. After looking a bit longer, I also noticed a man with a greenish face, dressed in yellow peering out from behind a tree in the background. There is also a face that appears to be looking down on the child. My brain finds it difficult to see these images as anything other than the faces I have percieved them to be. Once discovered, they do not fade away. Two possible explanations are that perhaps the website accidenty chose a 'find the hidden creatures' picture to display OR could it be just that when we expect to find something unusual, we try harder to see it. Personally, I think it's the former.

I looked too close at this picture. Seems like a half hour now . And I read all of the answers .
I used picassa to enhance the image , I wish I had not .
There are some cultures that believe shaman can cast you and your soul into the trees or earth or whatever they like .I am skeptical to a point but that point ends here. I cannot say for certain that this is not an altered Image , But if it is , its much more crafty than any "cut and paste " I have ever seen.

Since this is a picture from a geography site it is most likely just a coincidental pattern in the wood but I can easily see a face in the pattern, looka remarkable like a demon I say in a dream before and ironiccaly we were in a forest like that one. Maybe there is something to the picture but then again could be nothing.

I see a face, but my mind sorts visual patterns in order to make sense of the world. The color of the face closely matches the color of the leaves on the forest floor below, so I would guess falling leaves lodged in the crease of the tree trunk to form the face. If I could train my mind to sense extraordinary things, it would definitely be a wood sprite!

It's either an altered image or our brains playing tricks on us. Humans are 'hard wired' to see human faces. We will see them in lots of places where there is no face. There is a part of our brains that is used solely for facial recognition and our brain will look for and find faces in random images, like this shot. Our brain will sort of 'create' images for us that we recognize as a human face...we see it as a 'whole' instead of in 'parts'...if our brain weren't programed like this, we would probably just see the parts and not put them together to make a face.

It looks like some little nature spirit or elemental because of the way it blends into the tree.....it was caught off-guard and didn't have a chance to completely disappear into the trunk. Great picture!

Weird! There's a little child in the tree!
It may just be the shadows forming a picture. Humans are programmed to see human faces in things like wood grain and shadows. Very interesting though.

Okay, I downloaded a copy of the picture and opened it a graphics editor. I found two human-ish looking faces, a gorilla-looking face, and a vaguely human figure. Each of these is a result of pixleation due to the low-resolution of the photo.

Humans minds tend to see faces in all sorts of shapes... clouds grain of trees... I do see the face in the tree, but is it a face or objects that when put together look like a face? It is enteresting to say the least.
