I think it's due to the expansion of society (Note: I use the Sociology defination: Society is the totality of all relationships in a given space).
As society grows, people have a wider range of role models to look forward. They're more scared of not being accepted.

The media also plays a part. Advertisers know many people want to fit in and they do exploit that. Watch a channel for a long time and you'll see just how much the ads are repeated. For e.g an ad shows that if you use X perfume, you're irresistable to the opposite sex. At first, the watcher may scoff and go "Ha! Yeah, right." but as they repeatedly view the ad, it's going to get ingrained into their psyche.
