Years ago I read about using black tea to clean hardwood floors. I'm wonding if anyone has tried this? I would like to use products I may already have at home such as: tea, vinegar, etc.

I've never tried anything that I already have on my hardwood floors. I always just use Murphy Oil. It leaves my floors looking and smelling so clean, with just a little bit of shine. AND it's not sticky or slippery.

My aunt had her hardwood floors done about 5 years ago and she was told to clean them by using a gallon of lukewarm water with one cup white vinegar. The chemicals in many floor cleaners can strip and damage the hardwood. They told her not to wax the floors - no paste wax - no Endust - and no Murphey's Oil Soap because once the finish has been applied to the wood there is a protective coating over the wood, and those products will lay on top of the finish and will make the floor look dull. She's been cleaning the floors that way ever since and her floors look still look great! Hope this helps : )

I was made aware not too long ago, that if you use murphy's oil soap it leaves the oil in the wood floor, so if you ever want to repolyurethane the floor, it wont work. He suggested using the white vinegar and water on it, it naturally shines it. or if you want to refinish it, you would have to sand it and then polyurethane the floor. for a nice shine that lasts.

I like to use Murphy's Oil Soap on my mom's wood floors. There's nothing better. She has 2 dogs so they get dirty fast, but it cleans and prevents stuff from sticking for weeks to last. Hope this helps.

We vacuum and occasionally use a damp mop. Bruce makes a product that is petroleum based but it stinks and you should have good ventilation. Personally I like the damp mop then we use a regular bath towel to make sure we get up any drops of water.
