I was talking recently to someone working with wildlife in Esperance and there have been reports of dead young kangaroos as well. The most likely cause is the drought. All the ephemeral waterholes and many of the permanent ones are dry. There were then two periods with temperatures in excess of 40°C and it is likely the birds died of thirst and heat exhaustion.
