Use a Mac as the benchmark and then consider your options. If you have a lot invested in PC applications note that a Mac can run Windows if you purchase a copy of Windows from MS. Note that Mac costs the same as a name brand PC and is better optimized for your field.
Have you tried Apple's Aperture? It is a software package designed for photographers. Very professional. Check out the reviews. I have provided a link to the Aperture page on the main Apple site.
Integration with an iPod is good if you want to transport a large photo album without taking along the computer. You can show the images on the iPod and otherwise use it for storage.
-------
Here is a review I wrote for someone who was trying to decide between a Mac and a PC.
If you compare harder (speed, disk and memory, plus other features) I think you will find that many times a Mac is the same as a major brand name PC. Dell to Apple and there is no real difference.
What you should buy will come down to what you want to do and how you feel about the alternatives.
Note with a Mac you can purchase a copy of Windows so you can run either OS on the same machine. One view is that by going with Apple you can choose which OS you want to run each time you start an application. Hence the Apple choice hedges your bet while picking a PC manufacturer locks you in.
I suggest you consider what you want to do and what software you want to run. The Mac comes with a number of applications for media so you could end up with lower software costs with a Mac.
If there is specialized hardware then you might be forced in a specific direction.
If there is some software that runs only on a Mac you need a Mac. If some software runs only on Windows then you can buy a Mac and buy Windows and you will be fine. Or just buy the PC.
If you mostly focus on using the web, email, listening to music, etc. then almost any computer will do. With OS X on a Mac (the Mac operating system) you will have few issues with spy ware or viruses as the OS X is not much of a target for hackers.

A Dell or what? If you are intense photographer, I would go with a Mac. I am an all Dell PC user, however, I think that Apple has wonderful photography programs. If you don't want a Mac, I would get a Dell. Other choices would be HP or Gateway. Nothing else.

I'm a freelance web designer and I use a Dell Inspiron 6400, helps a lot that i can pay for it over time because as you know freelance work doesnt pay steadily... it runs Photoshop and Illustrator like a dream, plus I play games on it LOL EverQuest, Sims 2 etc.
If you want to go Mac, do it...but i had a mac, and went back to my PC most software programs are too bloody expensive in mac format and then clients have issues using my files because they all use PCs. I suppose if i ran my own design studio I'd get some Macs, but i'd always have PCs on hand too, just in case a client ever had to send me files :)

Good systems don't matter so much on the manufacturer as it does the speks( Needs 1 or more gigs of ram, good graphics card, Dual core processor, 100gig or more harddrive) If you get a windows vista home premium or Vista ultimate your guaranteed to have a system that does everthing you want. They'll be available after Jan 30, 07

Well go to Costco's web site and check out their computers. They have a thing where you customize your PC and get a package deal. They do Dell as well. Good luck to you.
