It may be a measurements test, but those are both just fractions. So just find a common denominator. You know 16 is a multiple of 8 so convert 1/8 into a fraction with the denominator as 16. 8 goes into 16 2 times and 2 times 1 is 2. So you're new fraction is 2/16. Now compare 1/16 to 2/16. You can see that 2/16 is bigger. So 1/8 is bigger.
Hope that helps. True you can just look at the denominators but what if you had 2/3 and 3/5...You can't just look and tell unless you can divide in your head.
You can also just divide 1 by 16 which is 0.0625 and divide 1 by 8 which is 0.125 and you can easily tell 1/8 is bigger.
Good Luck

Rule of thumb. The larger the bottom number, the smaller the measurement. 1/16 is smaller than 1/8. actually, 2/16 = 1/8.

The best way to compare fractions is to put them under a common denominator and compare the numerators.
Note that 1/8 = 2/16
Since you're comparing 1/16 and 1/8, this means you're also comparing 1/16 to 2/16. Obviously, 2/16 has the bigger numerator, making 1/8 larger.

First: take 1/16 and divide the fraction...
1/16
= 0.0625
Sec: take 1/8 and divide the fraction...
1/8
= 0.125
Third: let's take a look at the new results...
a) 1/16 = 0.0625
b) 1/8 = 0.125
*Let's look at the number in the tens-place > 0.0625 is smaller meaning, 1/16 is smaller.

No. When you double the denominator (lower number) in fractions you halve the size. So 1/16 is half of 1/8 or 2/16 is equal to 1/8.
