Nature vs. Nurture- It's easy to pick a side, especially with all the amazing work coming from the DNA work that claims that this gene causes that (Gay gene, fat gene, alchohol gene). But humens are complex organisms, complex biologically, and complex socially. So while your DNA gives you a starting point, culture takes over as soon as you pop out of Mom. The answer to any question like this, while not very exciting, is almost always- a little bit of both

Do you mean shy?
No one has the power to make you feel anyway that you aren't willing to feel.
You have to allow someone to have influence over you. It's your decision.
If someone calls you a "jerk", does that make you a jerk? Only if you are willing to allow it.
This is just my opinion, but I believe an introvert is very self-oriented and self-protective. They are more about themselves than others.
Lets look at the introvert's opposite; the extrovert. They are usually curious and like to quiz people, talk to people and reach out. The introvert reaches in.
Overall, society doesn't really have the ability to "make" someone an introvert. That's the individuals decision.

i think some of it comes with the genes, some of it comes with the way you are raised and who your friends are. im an introvert and ive always only been comfortable with 1 or 2 close friends..any more than that made me feel small. so maybe that comes from being born like that?

an introvert is someone who would rather do things on their own. they are usually shy and they prefer quiet situations rather than going out to a party. i'm an introvert and i think i was born like this all my friends are extroverted (the opposite) and hanging out with them hasn't changed me.

Both. If a person starts out with a naturally shy personality, and then
finds themselves in a situation where they are constantly trod upon, emotionally/physically abused, etc, it certainly would tend to make them become even more shy, reserved, etc.
Anyone can change, however. I started with a personality profile http://www.wedplan.com/plan_profiletest.php , and looked at the things I liked about myself, acknowledged what I was uncomfortable with, and started working to change what I could.
