It seems like he has put this book on hiatus, anyone know if he's even writing the third book

You may already know, but Abarat was originally planned as a series of four books. Clive has announced on his site that it will now be five. The current titles for volumes three and four are
"Absolute Midnight" and "The Eternal". Since he's announced a fifth book, I have some faith he's working and knows the extent of his tale. If he continues to do illustrations for the hardcover editions, it may take a while. In any case, I've yet to read anything about when these might be released.
On a side note, apparently, the deal with Disney to adapt the series to film has fallen through and the rights are back in Clive's hands.

suitable information i've got heard is off his website announcing he's working on the artwork mandatory to end the books. in spite of if, given how lengthy it incredibly is been considering Everville- i would not carry my breath.
