I would assume you are referring to bifurcation within mathematical chaos theory (a change in the structure of attractors)...
There are different types of bifurcation (flip, fold, pitchfork, and transcritical being the basics). It is a period doubling / quadroupling.
The most basic definition of it is a splitting or division of a structure into two parts.

I can't give you a specific def, but my son had a "bifurcated uvula", which meant his 'punching bag' thing in the back of his mouth, that hangs from the top, had two 'lobes' instead of the usual one. It looked like an upside down heart. Does that help at all?
