Get rid of all Temp.Internet files, clear the cookies, clear the history, and also delete everything in the Prefetch Folder if you have Windows XP either version. Then go to Control Panel Add/Remove programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use. After that run clean disk and do a defrag. Look for left over .chk, .old, and any .gid filesthat may be on your disk and delete them.

There is a way to clear up a lot of space not too many people are aware of.

When you update your computer from Microsoft website, the old files get stored, just in case you ever want to downgrade. I don't know anybody that has ever downgraded, except for companies where the update won't work with their old product.

You will have to show all files, etc in the Explorer Tools->Folder options.

In the Windows directory, you will see $NTUninstallXXXXX$
All those files are safe to delete, unless you ever plan on rolling back microsoft updates.

Personally, if you ever get to the point where your having to clear up space on the hard drive, it is time to upgrade the hard drive. The old one is old and will fail causing expensive disk recovery procedures. There is just too many stories on the web of disk failures and crashes.

If you have another drive just transfer the files you want to keep to the other drive. If not and you want to keep some files and not delete them - email them to your gmail account. Anything else requires buying another storage device to put the files on or deleting them.
