i've had two babies in the NICU so I've done alot of sterillizing, most items you buy have the instuctions on the label of what they recommend for sterillization. Some items they only wanted in boiling water for 3 mins, other items you could put in for 5 mins. Then I've had other instructions for different items that say hot soapy water. So I believe it depends on what your sterillizing.
When in doubt, I would put it in boiling water for a couple mins but just keep an eye on it. I also used a breast pump, and I did do the boiling water. They did give specific direction on what items to put in the boiling water, so make sure you find that part out.

Avent has a starter kit with baby bottles that come in a microwave sterilizer. That microwave sterilizer was a godsend when our daughter was little and we were still sterilizing everything. Bottles, pacifiers, breast pump parts. I'm sure that there are other manufacturers out there.

If you boil items in water, you need to watch them closely. The dishwasher might not get hot enough to sterilize and you could have soap residue left over. With the microwave sterilizer, you put a little water in the bottom, load it up, set the time and walk away. So easy that even a sleep deprived new mother can do it!

Good luck!

Boiling them is fine, that's how I did. I only did it for the first month, but my kids were born in the summer when cold and flu season is over. Boil them for about five to ten minutes. They also have these new sterilizers at Babies R Us that you can put in the microwave and it will sterilize things. But the easiest, cheapest way it to boil water.

I have an Avent microwavable sterilizer that you can put pumping stuff and bottles (not just Avent bottles) into to sterilize. I LOVE this thing. You just put all your stuff in it, put 7 oz. of water in the bottom of it, close it up, microwave it for four minutes, take it ut and wait two minutes. And viola, it's sterilized. Super easy - in fact my son is 7 months old, and it's so easy I still do it! You can but them at Babies-R-Us, Target, etc.

yes. sterilizing baby stuff is simply letting it soak in boiling water usually they say for 3-5 minutes. i dont know any other way to sterilize things?? Typically i dont sterilize my infants things until i am ready to use them as they can get dirty again before use.
Good luck with the new addition

Yes, if you read the packages for most pacifiers and bottles and things they say to soak in boiling water for 5 min. before the first use. After that I dunk them in boiling water after every use for at least the first few weeks of baby's life.
