I think that is a wonderful goal. I would not contribute money to your cause, but if you ran past my neighborhood I would let you spend the night here. The average will never run across America, and they couldn't. I suspect if you were in really good shape you might be able to run 50 miles a day so you could make it in a couple of months.

this would be considered a ultra race.
so if I were you, I would start looking into ultra running magazines and web pages to get some advice.
I think a good average pace is 12 to 10 min per mile.. that should be pretty realistic for an average Joe.
you definitely need a lot of training.
a friend of mine is ultra runner, training for a 50k and he runs like 80 to 100 miles a week as training.
so. it is definitely gonna be a big commitment and you should think about getting a doctor with you on the road, as well as a help team, because you will need water and food... and places to sleep...the general. a
if you're running that far (always depending how fast your goal is) you burn a lot a lot of calories, and you will definitely need medical oversight from a doctor.
in ultra race they even do weigh-ins and who looses to much weight during running, can't continue.
ultra running is serious business and I wouldn't try it just for the heck of it.
do it if you really really wanna do it.... if you have good support and give yourself enough time to train for it.
good luck.
