They are standing on the bottom close to the shore on a shelf. The "camera" angle when Tarzan is swimming is kindof far away in the deeper end away from the shore. Elephants can swim, and float.

Actually you should ask this question under physics. It has to do with the amount of water displaced weighing more than the elephants.

elephants can swim a lot!
i saw it on a documentary, i think it was based in sri lanka or in assam (NE India) and yes it has to do with relative density
its like asking how can a ship not sink since its so heavy?
