From a guy that has been there. I'm divorced, with kids, and have Spinal Cerubellar Ataxia (look it up)

From Thanksgiving to Valentines day is the suicide season. Jewelry stores tell you happiness is giving her a diamond. Christmas specials tell you that the holiday is about family.

If you live in the US, fortunately you have the NFL.

Pick a team and go.

No I can't help you with those last two weeks before Valentine's day.

If you are a woman, you got good advice

For any women remember that drill seargents and football coaches are not very supporting either.

If you are a guy, read on.

Most suicides are to "get at" somebody. They'll get over it before you do.

If you are that stupid, please kill yourself and quit whining about it. (Remember ladies, this is not for you.)

If you are the small percent of people who live with pain etc. I sympathize. I can relate. The reason I use is weird hope that tomorrow will be a good day with little pain. (Besides I can't kill myself while my football team is doing good.)

I have been through many difficult times, I know well the place where you are at my friend!

There have been times in my life when I have been in impossible situations including a hospital bed where I was in a permanently vegetative coma, where when I miraculously came out of coma was paralysed unable to walk or communicate but in intense unremitting pain with total amnesia unable to remember how to control bodily functions. I could not talk, I could not scream out in pain, I could not remember, I could not even move my eyes, things could not be any worse than this! I could not even lift a finger to end my life if I had wanted to, but I had to live and against impossible odds I fought and clawed my way back to a full recovery.

It was terrible and yet I am glad that I suffered and that I passed through death, survived, returned, and had bad, bad times even after that, so I could many times bring words of hope and purpose to one of my brothers & sisters on this tiny satellite we call Earth.

If you feel that your life is not worth living and you would climb a tall building to jump off, I hope that I am there to hold your hand so that you will know when you go you are not alone, you are not without a friend, you are not without someone that understands the enormity of the impasse you are at. You will know that I hold your hand not because I wish to die but because I wish for you to live, for like you my friend my time here is not yet done, and you will know that I will nevertheless risk my life for you for I know that you have a future and that your grief you can turn into the spring board of your inner greatness and peace!

My friend I would like to thank you for the help that you have given me since I still suffer with a lot of pain from that accident in 1978 which also gave me epilepsy so I never know when I am will seize again and literally stop living, and I do firmly believe that I am safe just as long as I am needed by people such as you that need help and support, and so it is for you my friend!

Find out who it is that needs you perhaps in this very column!

He has to fix his life.

Usually this is best done with a qualified therapist. Drugs help, but merely cover the pain, and don't usually solve the problem.

So, get a physical, and go to therapy. Anti-depressants might be part or all of the solution, but expect to talk about painful things in therapy. The pain is very much worthwhile.

"Let me tell you something you already know, the world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now if you know what you're worth, now go out and get what you're worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that!" -Rocky Balboa
