Those who are in a position to legalize it are making much more money in the trade by keeping it illegal. If it were legal, people would grow their own.

As to the second--based onn the available evidence, marijuana has some health risks if used in excess--but they don't appear to be as severe as long term alcohol abuse. And its' medical value is welll documented.
Its immediate effects are no more severe than--and usually less disruptive--than being drunk. It still impairs judgement--no one has any business driving a car, etc. while under the influence.
As to why it is not legalized--there is a religious belief among the neo-conservatives that marijuana is "bad"--which they try to back up by pseudoscience and falsified statistics--none of which any reputable scientists takes seriously.
One thing that advocates of legalization often forget, however: we do need to know more about the effects of marijuana--and if legalized it should be regulated the same way alcohol is.
The research is really needed--but hasn't been done because those same conservatives have blocked every attempt to do so--ironically then claiming they have "scientific proof" of their claims--when in fact its they who'[ve been blocking the research.
What we do know, however, is essentially what I stated above--moderate health risk if used for a long time, and impaired function while under the influence of the drug--but the effects are not as severe in most cases as high consumption of alcohol.

Because most of the big business and lawyers are in some way selling and definitely smoking it. Also the government can't seem to find a way to tax it so they will make money off of it by busting people and making them pay fines or jail time (for now). When I was very young (teen years) I smoked marijuana and stopped but I can't seem to stop smoking cigarettes so I would reconsider which one is the lesser of the two evils?

The disadvantage is that in some susceptible people it can cause mental problems.
I stopped it because i was having some problems, and I though at that stage it might escalate into something more serious.
But unlike tobacco it doesn't cause cancers, you can't die from an overdose, and it a lot easier to buy at any age, there's no regulation or taxation.

Alcohol has killed more then any reefer ever will. What does alcohol do to brain tissue,it atrophies and dries it out. This Leeds to less brain matter, loss of motor skills, speech, memory damage.PBS had a good documentary on the effects and damage of alcohol.
Reefer madness said its the stepping stone to other drugs, when in fact it is Alcohol. Its nice we have a bunch of government officials running the country imbibing in alcohol.Where is the sound mind and body here.Hence,I coined the name of Pickle Brain,Pickled in alcohol.Over dose on alcohol you die, over dose on pot and go to sleep, whoa, sounds really deadly to me.Illegal drugs know matter what they are de-values human life.If its all legal hypocrites, whom would do heroin, only the ones using now.The whole quagmire is all about money and control. The Trillions wasted on B.S. drug control could go for helping education, the poor and homeless, environment and social accountability, not just the peons morons.

It is harmful to your brain although probably less harmful than cigarettes. Even so the government cannot make a positive decision to addle peoples brains - nor should they. We expect them to look after our interests a bit

A good question, considering cigarettes kill thousands every year and I can't remember when I heard that someone died from marijuana use.

It can cause mental illness especially if you have a tendency - if it runs in the family for instance. It increases dopamine in the brain and increased dopamine is linked to schizophrenia.
