If you do well, you will be accepted to a good college or university. Once in college or university, many employers that recruit students out of there directly or have an "associates program" for them like many major Canadian banks, will quite simply not even consider you if your marks are below average.
Even in the workplace, some employers will choose the candidate with the better marks for a promotion if you and the others score even on everything else (work performance).

School forms the basis on which many, many activities in life are based. Learning, finding out how to learn and study, meeting new people, learning to get along with new people and work with any people is the key to a successful life. Having the opportunity to see others in the learning environment teaches tolerance, learning to work with others teaches co-operation and team work. Speaking to and listening to others teaches one to get along with others and how to express yourself and your wants to the world. School is essential to the well being of a society that values interaction and the betterment of society. Social awareness and caring for the individuals that make up a society are developed through schools that can rarely be replaced by learning outside of the school situation. So doing good in school has benefits as it is preparation for life. From an early time children should be praise for their accomplishments as they lead them to greater goals and a good school should endorse positive feedback and role models. At times negativism can destroy the school setting and this needs to be weeded out at the outset or a school can end up being a negative instead of a positive. Good luck and choose a good school even if it means driving your child to it or moving within that schools' boundaries.

You should do good in school because it will help you in everyday life. Just for example reading and spelling if you cant do either you can't get a good job in the future.

It really depends on what you want out of life. If you don't mind working in low paying jobs and living in smaller housing and in general having less money to spend on things, then doing well in school is not that important and you just need basic skills to get by. But be prepared to have less in life then of things that require money to achieve.
If you want more material items out of life, nice house, nice car, nice job, good food, money to spend on things you want, money to be able to put aside for a comfortable retirement. Then doing well in school becomes very important.
I'll work it backwards for you. The best jobs go to the candidates who have the best credentials. This is a mix of schooling and experience. So a large component of getting a good job is doing well usually in college or possibly even graduate school (beyond college).
To get into a better college or to at least have a chance of getting scholarship money to pay for some college you either have to be terrific in sports or have excellent grades coming out of high school. It also helps to have take some Advanced Placement classes in High School.
To do well in High School and have a chance to get into Advanced Placement classes you have to have a good base of knowledge from Grade School.
To do well in Grade School YOU have to care about what your doing. Start setting goals of what you want out of life now and work towered them. But again it's up to what you want out of life. Now understand you can change and decide to do better in school later in life but the longer it takes the harder it is to make the switch.
I had rotten grades in grade school and high school. I got into a smaller no name college, had to pay for it myself and then decided that I didn't want to work in grocery stores the rest of my life. It was very hard but I turned myself around and became an A student. But even then when I graduated because I only got a Associates Degree I had a hard time finding a good job. I had to work lesser jobs to build up experience to boost my credentials. Even now, (although these days I do pretty good for myself) I will see much younger people advance much faster than myself because they came out of better colleges or went to graduate school. So believe me the sooner you start the better life you can have.
