There are hundreds of Old Wives' Tales surrounding pregnancy and this is one of them. Your baby does not run the risk of getting his/her umbilical cord wrapped around the neck because you raise your hands over your head.
Here is a website that lists some of the Old Wives' Tales http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/myths/a/aa042299.htm

I was always told that also. I've been scared into believing it since my cousin lost a twin during pregnancy because the cord choked one of them and rotted the neck from the body while she was carrying it. I'm not sure what caused the cord to wrap around that baby's neck, but I'm careful not to raise my arms too far anyway. I get on a stool or something to be closer to whatever I'm needing to reach.

No I have never heard that. It's probably a myth or a suspician. That doesn't have anything to do with the umbilical cord wrapping around the baby's neck.

Haha, yea old wives tales. Fun aren't they.
Logically how is that possible??? haha. No it's not true, just smile and nod at this kind of "advice" hehe.
Note to you though, lifting heavy things over your head (like trying to get a heavy pan or caserole dish down from a high cupboard) is a no no, has nothing to do with an umbilical cord though hehe, is more to do with your round ligaments, you can pull or damage them and any damage to the uterine ligaments can bring on premature labor.
I had a very exciting ambulance ride because of my round ligaments, its not fun to damage them. I'm on bed rest now because of it and cant wait for this all to be over.

That is an old wives' tale. My mother-in-law (who is like 60) told my sister-in-law that when she was pregnant. But I think it is ridiculous. I have never been told that by a Doctor. I have never read that in any pregnancy book or pamphlet, so I think it's okay for you to raise your hands.
Lots of older people have "advice" like that (like, you shouldn't let your kids be left-handed, etc.) and I suggest you just ignore them.

That's false. The baby is connected to your stomach, not your arm!! You can raise your hand after 4 months, with no worries.

Thats a false statement. Raising your arms up only opens your airway for better breath which would be better for baby. Better consuption of oxygen.
