As a teacher of 13 year-old students I can tell you with experience that boys at 13 are far more difficult to control than girls. However, that does depend on your definition of wild. A class with an unequal/high distribution of boys is a dreadful thing.

Boys tend to feed off each others' behavior and can quickly take classroom control away from an untrained teacher. I once had an end of the day study hall with 31 boys and two girls. I had to be extremely tough and unforgiving. Any small infraction of the rules had to merit a teacher's detention. That meant the offender was to attend my morning detention. Immediate consequences for misbehavior demonstrated that they would pay for their actions. This was the only way of keeping the lid on such a group.

I would not have ever had the same problem with the same size group of girls.
