Try FlashFXP & a cross-over cat5 ethernet cable, not sure what settings you need to use with it but it's worth a go. Or if you have an i-pod with some free space & the usb cable you could try that (enable the ipod as a removable hdd). Or if you are willing to open up ur PC you could connect the PC HDD to the laptop with an IDE to USB converter/adapter cable from ebay. Or you could buy a DVD ReWriter for cheap from dabs.com & get an IDE to USB adapter from ebay to use it as an external drive with your PC.

Run the network setup wizard on both computers, making sure that
you the same domain name for each computer, and enable file and print sharing on each. Using windows explorer found under the accessories tab right click on the directory you want to transfer and click on sharing and click box to share this file or folder. Do this for each file or folder you want to share.

You have to "allow" the laptop to access the files on the other comp'.
I am fuzzy about this, it has been awhile.
Go to the individual file and right click.
Left click "properties"
I believe there is a way to select "allow network" or something to that effect.
Sorry so vague.
Good luck

you can't direct connect the two with that cable, you cold try a "crossover ethernet" cable.
best way would be to get a router or a hub and make a small home network

You probably need a null or cross over ethernet cable.
The cable that goes from your computer to the modem is straight through. The one you need is crossed.
This is the computer to Modem
TX -- RX
RX -- TX
This is computer to computer, which will not work.
TX -- TX
RX -- RX
This is what you need. ( I can't seem to draw it very well.).
TX - -TX
X
RX - - RX
If you look at the ethernet card, you should see lights blinking if it is connected correctly.

I can't tell what you're doing from your dialogue, either.
What type internet connection do you have?
Do you have a router?
Is your ethernet cable a crossover or regular cat5?
