I cannot be sure of the dates, although I should do because I used to drive a sight seeing bus past it 4 times a day. The commentator was Tony Blackburn on a reel to reel tape machine. It was very temperamental.
Battersea Power Station was designed by Gilbert Scott, who also gave us the famous red telephone box.
It started being built in the 1930s, so it is Art Deco in style. It was decommissioned around the beginning of the 1980s.
There are over 8 million bricks in its construction. Only two of the chimneys actually worked. two are dummies, just for aesthetic purposes. You can see this if you look at it. Two have black rings around the top, two do not.
It was "green" in so much that heat generated was pumped under the Thames to heat a block of flats opposite.
A lot of schemes have been dreamt up to what to do with it. Everything from art centres to indoor amusement parks. It has proven too expensive because the sulphur emitted over 50 years has eaten into the brickwork. Not good at all. A Superman film was shot there in the 80s with Christopher Reeves. I think it was Superman 2. There was so many of them.
I think it will be left to rot beyond repair and be demolished. Shame.

Station A was completed in 1939. From 1953 - 1955 Station B was built. Station A was shut down in 1975 with rumours that Station B would soon follow, but it was not until 1983 that Station B finally shut down.
