I'm glad you want to improve yourself. I've been working on that for many years. Forgiving someone who hurt you is very hard. It's compounded if they continue to hurt you. I too am a believer in Jesus, there are steps I use to forgive people.
Go to that person and tell them. That gives them the opportunity to ask for forgiveness.
If that's impossible ( they're dead, or in a foreign country or won't speak to you) Tell yourself that you forgive them.
The next step is: when the hurt keeps coming back, make a conscious effort to think of something else. Something you really like to do, a friend or relative you love, , plan a trip.
Praying for that person everytime the thought of them comes to mind really helps as well, then you start thinking of something else. Star

People aren't perfect. They/we all have issues.
Speaking as a mother, let me tell you for an absolute fact that no matter what, you always love your children.
No matter what.
My relationship with my daughter is not good, but I love her no matter what.
Always know that your mom loved you.
Now, speaking as a mother, I can tell you that sometimes we don't like the things our children do, as in their behavior, but we always still love them.
It sounds like you are well on the way to understanding your mom and forgiving her. Time is the best counselor.
Just don't forget, no matter what, she loves you.

Realizing that every living being on this Earth originally came from the same place has made it easier for me to forgive others - and it's also made it easier for me to treat people better in the first place.

According to God , we must forgive every one ,even our enemies, an enemy is something more then somebody who hurts us , but we also must love this enemy .
And reffering to parents , we have one of the 10 comandments , that we must love our parents and honour them.
There are others who have problems with their mom and dad , and Jesus said that it will be like that ....But remember that we must love our parents and honour them .....visit them when we will have our own families , buy them presents ...be proud that they are our parents , respect them , respect their opinions , and forgive them if they are wrong. They gave us the life from God ...

It is impossible to do on your own. Knowing that Jesus died for me and that God forgives me of my sins helps me to forgive others, as do prayer and reading the Bible. Loving Jesus and trying to live like him are the things that make it easy for me to forgive people who have wronged me.

Can you really forgive them? or do you just want to do so because you want to be a better person? Figure out first if you really are ready to forgive them, then if you're sure, simply forgive... But don't forgive if you're not ready because it will make you worse, not better. ^_^

The bottem line is that we CHOOSE ALL that we feel or do.There is nothing you can't change IF YOU DECIDE TO and work at it.
Easy to say, I know, tough to do.
