I mean I always thought the "crippler" thingie started with Benoit breaking Sabus neck. But now that I see the video again, the announcers are calling him crippler right when he is walking to the ring, even before the match started.

Listen closely, and you'll notice they call him CRIPPLER Chris Benoit, so the nickname obviously didn't started at that match as we thought :(

come on, guys !! I know hes Crippler Chris Benoit because his finisher is called Crippler Crossface, but that word "CRIPPLER" must have come from somewhere!!

In 1994, Benoit signed with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). While there, he dropped the "Pegasus" gimmick, becoming The Canadian Crippler, because of his rougher style, and an incident where he took out Rocco Rock with a powerbomb through a table. Coincidentally, after taking up this gimmick, Benoit was involved in a match with Sabu during which Sabu broke his neck.

I think it was Dean Malenko who changed Benoits crossface into the name of "crippler crossface". And Benoit liked that so he began to call himself "crippler" Chris benoit

He is a self-proclaimed "crippler." He gave himself that nickname, it was not given to him by a feat that he accomplished. When he joined the WWE, he decided to receive that nickname, since it has to do with his finisher, the Crippler Crossface.

The name " The crippler" was given to him that night by creative control, the fact that during the match he broke Sabus neck by accident just gave more credability to the name and it stuck there after..

Because when Benoit was in ECW, he wrestled Sabu, and did an overhead suplex on him. Sabu didn't flip over all the way, and landed basically on his head, and broke his neck in the process. From then on, Benoit was known as "The Crippler".
