World War I is the dawn of what is often called "total war". In the past, kings used to head armies and they would meet on the battlefield and things would get decided in large scale battles. Peasants could change masters several times without it affecting their daily lives in a radical way - They were heavily taxed both in money and resources under any master.
World War I brought in conscription, where members of all classes of society were expected to fight. But it also brought in civilian populations in direct contact with war. Cities and factories became prime targets for the first time. Also, for the first time, a country's industrial production was understood to be a part of the war effort. Factory production would be diverted to make weapons on a large scale. Food would be rationed as production switched from civilian goods to military equipment so that even in America, where bombs did not land, the average civilian would directly feel the effects of war.

One can say that WW1 was the only war the US entered because its opponents tried to persuade Mexico to enter it in return for land conquered by the US 70 years before (had the US opponents won). Or maybe the reason the US entered both World Wars is because Germany attacked civilian vessels, including those belonging to the US.
