Depends what you mean by "dead". If it's not detected at all, it may simply be loose cables. If it's detected but not working properly, go to the drive manufacturer's site and download their diagnostic tool, which will tell you if it's salvageable or not.

A drive may appear "dead" but the only way you'll know for sure is to have a reputable service person rewrite (reformat) the harddrive.

A drive that's going bad may crash frequently... it may grind or make other noises.... etc.
