Like it, it will give the kid a sense of pride and hopefully he will do things the way Martin Luther King did them.

I wouldn't. At least not "Martin Luther". It's like a trademark or retiring a jersey number in sports. Using can be interpreted as an insult to the memory of the original Martin Luther King, Jr. Especially since you are white.
Another thing. Think about your son. What do you think life will be like in grade school and high school for a white boy with the name Martin Luther King? Bullys are bad enough without something like that to spur them on.
Don't do it. Let your son make his own name, not someone else's. And don't put a weight around his shoulders from the start.

Martin Luther King is a great man that will live forever in black history. You do what you want..it's your baby. If people make him suffer in his life, despite King's greatness because he's white and King was black, don't blame them. You "tagged" the kid. A suggestion: Why not use Martin or Luther and something else? You still have the recognition of him that you want without causing your baby to possibly suffer unjustly in life--kids and people face enough adversity in life without having to defend their birth name. Suggestions using "Martin" or "Luther" only: Martin Aaron; Martin Antonio; David Martin; James Luther; Damon Luther; Devon Luther. Personally, since you're white, I wouldn't use Luther as the child's first name, if you take my suggestion, for the same reason I wouldn't call the baby Martin Luther King.

The fact that you are even considering it, is a testament to your willingness to look past a persons skin color and appreciate them for what they stood for.....................or you just like the name. Either way, I see nothing wrong with that. But understand that there will be a lot of ignorant people that will feel as if that is inappropriate simply because King was Black. Think about it like this; How many Black people have African surnames? Why would it be okay for Blacks to have White or European names and not a White boy share a name with someone Black? Either way, Martin,Luther and King are all of European origin. Look at it that way.

Martin Luther King was named after a white leader in history, so why not name a white kid after a black leader. The operative word is LEADER.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was named after his father who was named after a white religious Christian leader. Name your baby whatever you want. There are no, "white or black" names in my opinion.

does it matter if you're white . give your child whatever name you want. martin Luther king is only a black name because some one black had that name. if someone white had it then everyone would say it's a white name. if that is the name you want to give your child go ahead. it doesn't matter. i don't see things in black and white. i see them in a ll different colours. if you wanted to give your child the name red i would also tell you to go ahead and give him that name. the only reason it is called red is well, because it is actually red. are you getting the point.

What you name your child is your business. Just be aware that he will come in for ridicule by other kids. However, kids being what they are will always find something to make fun of whether it's a name, the colour of hair, or the type of shoes someone else is wearing.
If MLK were still living today, he would probably be very flattered that you want to name your son after him.

I wouldn't suggest naming a child after any famous person. You'll only invite ridicule - particularly if your family has no direct connection to the person. Why not just name him Martin in honor of Dr. King? My brother Aaron is named for Hank Aaron!

Why would you do something like that?! Have some individuality! I hope you're not doing this just to be able to say in the future that you're not racist! Give the child his OWN name! He is his own individual person. But I hope you know that if you do give you're child this name..be ready for the teasing that he will face all of his life!
