* Turn off the power to the fan at the fuse box.
*
STEP 2: Remove the cover and soak it in hot water with dishwashing liquid. You can use an old toothbrush to scrub the hard-to-reach places.
* STEP 3: Unplug the fan unit and pull it out. Set it on some newspaper or cardboard.
*
STEP 4: Wipe the fan unit down with dry paper towels. When you get the dust cleared away, you may need to spray some window cleaner on a soft cloth and wipe the blades down.
*
STEP 5: Vacuum out the enclosure with a vacuum crevice tool, then wipe it clean with a dry cloth.
*
STEP 6: Put the unit back together and replace the cover.

Tips & Warnings

* Some fan units can't be removed. If this is the case with yours, simply clean the filters by soaking them in hot, soapy water.
* Don't use abrasive scouring powders to clean the fan's parts.
* Never spray liquid into the fan itself or onto electrical parts.

Try using some foaming spray, not Easy Off because that's too harsh, but like a bathroom foaming spray. I use a generic store brand that's about $1.50 per can and it works wonders, not only for the kitchen & bath, but also works well cleaning other household items, i.e. ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, etc.

Simply spray on, wait a few seconds, wipe off with an old towel or rag...dampen the towel first since this will aid in the absorbtion of the residue. A second treatment may be required for heavily soiled items but once you've thoroughly cleaned them, additional cleanings will be a breeze.

If its too greased up try scraping off the grease with a knife or scraper.
Next time round use a baffle over the fan, that way you only need to clean the baffle which should be easier.
If your spraying any sort of liquid on the fan, please make sure the power has been switched off and the plug disconnected or you could get electrocuted.

if you can remove it, soak it in ammonia and water for a while. This should cut the grease easily. Then just use a rag to clean it. If you can not remove it make a solution of ammonia and water and spray it on there letting it sit, spray several times until the grease becomes easy to wipe off. If the grease is very thick try just using straight ammonia.
Good luck!

Spray the fan uniformly with bleaching powder, (mostly chlorine)
leave for some time and then wipe it with a cotton cloth dipped in warm water. If it is not too greasy, you can wipe it with baking powder, quite often, as it is not poisonous too.

What about those Magic Erasers? I've never tried the exhaust fan, but I did use it on my oven hood, which was greasy and they got it clean with less elbow grease than ever imaginable.
