Crying as an emotional reaction is a socially conditioned response to relieve stress, similar to laughing.*

Crying releases tears that have been shown to remove stress-induced chemicals from the body.

* (Note: Laughing also releases stress, but social conditioning teaches us when laughing or crying is appropriate for different situations. I didn't believe this until a friend of mine laughed at her grandmother's funeral because of the stress. Because I understood it was stress-induced, I didn't judge her for it; but her father was very upset because he did not get it and thought she was being rude when she didn't mean this at all.)
