Has anyone written an art review before? I have been asked to write a review on a piece of visual art, but have never been asked to do something like this before... and truthfully... it seems to be a very intimidating task... on one hand, I do want to express my true feelings about the painting and that includes touching on it's short comings... but i also do not want to be ruthless because the artist is a close friend of mine.... what should i do???

when asked to review something you should always be honest in your opinion of the work. If you are not than that can damage the friendship even more.Honesty can be a hard thing at times even if it is for the greater good, but you have to think would you feel better knowing that you told your true feelings or that you basically lied as to not be hurtful, you have to decide which would be more painful in the end,art is a part of this person apart of their heart and who they are

I think you should be honest and do any honest review of the piece. Speak with your friend and tell them this is what you plan to do. If they are going to exhibit or are submitting a portfolio they will come across a lot of people who will Cristie them worse than you will, if they can't handle it from you what chance will they have from a professional critic? Being someones friend isn't about telling them what they want to hear it's about telling them the truth, that's the only way they and your friendship can grow. So bit the bullet and do the review

BTW - I don't remember you being in Paper Street, didn't we refuse you entry as you were too small?

I have only done a TV show review and I was honest, but I liked it so it wasn't hurtful. The fact that you are friends with the artist is unfair toward your readers. You are biased. Whoever is having you do this should have found someone else to review it.

I've written Theatre reviews for small things, basically go with your own loving opinion and shoudl you want to Point out negatives you could say something like..

While others might focus on the small imperfections or find the Medium a bit off color, I think this is a Piece you shouldn't miss.

"Get what I mean?". If you end up hating it them maybe you could find a way to see it with their eyes....?

I'm sure you can find a way to be honest without being ruthless. Its a review! You have to give your honest opinion.
