If you have a free wall, try looking into a wall organizer. They are carried by most hardware stores and home centers. If you get one, make sure that it is flexible so that you can change things around and/or adding new shelves, baskets, hangers, etc without replacing or tearing the whole thing apart.

As my mother used to say, "Every thing in its place will make your life easier." Needless to say I'm still short on the organization side.

Sounds like you need some organizational tools, and systems. I personally love the Container Store. Remember to utilize your vertical (wall) space. Check out http://www.containerstore.com
Target also has some cute organizational stuff. I try to find things that have dual purposes, like an ottoman that opens for storage, etc. Under-bed storage containers are great for keeping less used items and keepsakes out of the way.

Get a friend to help you organize, they'll have an objective eye that you don't have -- then offer to do something for them in exchange. And if you want, clean out your closets and have a party w/ where people will take stuff you don't want or need...

You need to get those RUBBERMAID containers. They come in all sizes, they stack well, and they are VERY inexpensive. You can put all kinds of things in them that belong together. You can also throw a blanket or tablecloth over them and make cute tables. No one will ever know what is underneith!
