My husband put my wheel chair in the boot of the car. Left the carrier bags on the floor and drove away.
the supermarket, said it was handed in. we were lucky.

This wasn't a big food trip or anything, but I went to Target a few weeks ago and threw a bottle of hand sanitizer in the cart.
Went to look for it in the bags on the way out and it wasn't there...wasn't charged for it, wasn't in the cart (I looked). I didn't hear it fall out of the cart or see it fall out. It just *poof* disappeared.
I'm still confused.

I lost a big pack of bacon once. I found it 3 weeks later under the back seat of the car! Yuk!!
I guess it must have fallen out of the bag and rolled under there.

Can happen but it is usually something small left behind on the check out desk. If it is expensive and charged on your bill you can phone the shop and enquire whether it was left and handed in. I did and got back my 'lost' items.

Oh my god, sooo often.
I always ring the shop.
There can be a very fussy customer behind you who is in a hurry, and you find yourself racing to pack your stuff; cram it all into bags so you don't inconvenience the person behind you.
Ah crackers!!
Take your time; i DON'T CARE ANYMORE. Let them Compalin I'm taking too long.
