During the First World War, the king decided to change from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor, because some people were accusing him of being a traitor and a German sympathiser. Totally wrong of course, but when you have lost your husband, father, brother, killed by Germans, who can blame you for being a little irrational. After he changed, he never looked back. The Battenburgs anglicised their name to Mountbatten shortly after.
I'm sure I will be corrected if I have anything wrong here.

Saxe-Coburg Gotha until the 1st World War as it would have looked silly using the real Royal line which is still German. They changed it to Windsor as this seemed neutral and if you've ever been to Windsor you'll never find a more neutral place, it's up there with Belgium. Pity really as the Royal Family certainly enjoy mindless killing so they would have been pretty useful in the war.

Only Anna and Tony have given the right answers! Someone said that Queen Victoria's House Name was Saxe Coburg Gotha, but it wasn't, that was her husband's and future family name until 1917. Queen Victoria was of course the last Hanoverian Monarch.

Saxe Coburg. It's still the same family but it was changed in 1917 because Saxe Coburg sounded too German, and we were fighting against them in WW1!
