Hughes Grant do you mean Ulysses S. Grant. Hughes Grant is an actor.

Lee vs Grant I think Lee was better leader, Grant had the better team, and that makes all the difference.

Keep in mind that Grant didn't face Lee directly until Grant took effective command of the Army of the Potomac in May of 1864. By that time, the Conferates were irrevokably on the defensive, the Union had control of the Mississippi and Sherman had started his famous (or, if you prefer, infamous) March to the Sea and had placed Atlanta under seige. Grant's strategy was simple. Sherman would lead an attack into the deep South which would head towards Savannah, Georgia and then head north to Charlestown, South Carolina. These were the South's biggest ports, critical for imported supplies, and Sherman would also disrupt the South's rail supply network in the process of getting to them. Grant was going to to directly engage the Army of Northern Virginia with the goal of caputuring Richmond. Lee was able to hold off Grant for 11 months which was pretty good considering that the balance of power had tipped to the North by that time. Lee's primary failings were that he was unable to adequately supply his Army and did not have a highly efficient artillery arm as the North did. I get the impression, and this would bear futher investigation, that Lee was more of a fatalist in that he believed that God would determine the eventual outcome and that there was relatively little that he, Lee, could do about it. Probably on a general to general and soldier to soldier basis the South was the better Army. In war, however, having better personnel doesn't always win. What really defeated the South was simply that the North had more people and more industrial capacity. (I'm not positive, but I think the North had about twice the population of the South and most factories were located in the North.) If you have more troops, guns and ammo than your enemy you will probably win in the long run.
