I always see guys that are more miserable than women (due to the nature of today's society). But the stats say that women suffer from depression more than men, even in this day of women having more rights than men,

Why is this? And what are women doing about it? And yet men commit suicide more successfully and frequently than women.

The documented cases of depression are higher in women than men...the same is true for anxiety disorders. Documented means, reported and diagnosed by a professional.

There are several hypothesis for this anomaly. For example:

One, women are more likely to seek help. Two, women have less problem talking about and admitting to their feelings. Three, men are more likely to self-medicate their depression with alcohol, sex and illegal drugs.

Rights of men and women have nothing to do with depression and you are wrong that women have more rights than men. SW

All that is known for sure is that more women than men seek help for depression. It is believed that there are just as many men who are depressed, and there is some reason even to think perhaps more. But men have been socially programmed for a very long time with the notion that it is somehow "unmanly" to seek help, either for a physical or an emotional problem. Women generally do not feel there is some sense of "shame" or "failure" to see a doctor about a problem, but for centuries male children have been raised in the belief that the man has to be the strong one - the tough one, and he is considered much less of a man if he dares to "act like a woman" and go running for help with a physical pain or an emotional one.
Especially in today's world I think life is significantly harder on men, and yet that old idea of what "being a man" is supposed to be about, unfortunately continues to have an effect, and because of this, men just don't seek the help and support that is available to anyone. It's a great shame that more people are not trying harder to kill this ridiculous idea once and for all, because if we got rid of it, we would soon discover that men are every bit as victimized by depression, and its consequences as women are. If they went for help, and were appropriately treated, I am sure those suicide statistics would dramatically change too.

Men feel they are showing a sign of weakness if they admit they are depressed
If depression goes untreated it can lead to suicide
More women seek help get treatment which helps prevent suicide and do not think for one minute we who are depressed and are on medication don't think of suicide the only thing that keep me from it is my child.....I have been on medication since 1994-5 and it hasn't been a picnic in the park attempted suicide 3 times found all 3 times by friends

As far as your comment on women having more rights than men ..... that is a joke we are still under paid still thought of as lower class still passed up for higher jobs in corporations ...... where do you see we are getting more rights than men, you just read about this you are not a female trying to get these opportunities are you?
We are trying to fight for rights but always held back by men.

Men commit suicide successfully because they don't try to take the "easy" way out. They get it done and over with ~ gun, jump to their deaths, hanging, etc. Women try to poison themselves mostly. And I believe men and women are equally depressed across the board. We all have issues.

Well, you are not right. More suicidal and depressed are unmarried man. Women can cope better with physical or psychological pain (it is in our nature because of the ability to give birth, menstruation process...). Man without women are totally lost. Women can be depressed but it is not fatal for us, because we are used on difficulties in life.

I'm not sure they are....men just hide it. But if it is the case i would have to say it is because women are more emotional beings. Not putting them down just stating facts.

Hormones and menopause in women is a big reason. Men kill themselves over job stress, finances, and putting up with menopausal women!
