If someone can tell me how to type in a (lowered small number). What I mean by it is that it is the opposite of a raised number like 2^3. It is written small and at the bottom instead of at the top. So ill phrase my question like this....
What is a(with a lowered small 3) if n = 3 and a(with a lowered small n) = 3/n ?

1.

The term is "sub" so you're talking about "a" sub 3 if "a" sub n = 3/n. Generally used for sequences.

It's basically an algebraic function that you solve by substitition, as in:
what is f(3) if f(x) = 3/x, so 3/3 = 1.

To type it, (I use MS Office) go to
insert on menu bar, to object.
Create new: Microsoft Equation 3.0
then you'd type a, and click the equation bar area third from the left on the bottom, (looks like a grey rectange with smaller black rectangles above and below) and find the one with the black rectange below and right, to type in your 3.

I'm going to use a[3] to represent your a (with a lowered small 3).

You're given that n = 3, and
a[n] = 3/n

Since you want to solve a[3], all you have to do is replace the n by 3.

a[3] = 3/3 = 1

It is called a subscript.
a_1 is how some do it.
Anyhow, since a_n = 3/n, a_3 = 3/3 = 1
