Go directly to the airline's website.

In the past, the airlines would put cheap fares on Yahoo! Travel (Travel.yahoo.com), etc.

However, starting a few years ago, most of them pulled their reservations back to their own website so they didn't have to pay commissions.

If you use a travel website, you'll miss all of the Southwest fares, for instance. Northwest usually reserves its cheapest fares for its own site now. I'm sure that the rest of them are either the same way, or moving that direction.

It's a pity -- if you're not flying in and out of a major carrier's hub (ie, Minneapolis for Northwest) then it's nice to compare all of your options... and those travel sites were great for travel options as well as fares.
