America did what no other country had done- they rebelled against the Mother. Every time Parliament placed a tax on ANYthing, the colonists protested, someties violently. Like whiny children they complained and threw temper tantrums until England repealed the offending tax. This drama ocurred over and over again until England, sick of being harassed by her own colonies, decided that in order to retain some semblance of authority, she would keep one tax intact: the infamous tax on tea.
The colonists "Whigged" out (history pun, haha), and went through with what we now know as the Boston Tea Party. Fifty American men covered in soot and feathers, "in a bad imitation of Mohawk Indians" clambered aboard a British vessel sitting in Boston Harbor and dumped ten thousand English pounds worth of tea into the water.
Obviously, this ticked the Brits off. Quite soon after that, some Bostonians began harassing a lone British sentry on guard in Boston. As more and more Bostonians joined in the taunting, eight guards came to their comrade's aid. Then, the crowd began throwing stones, ice, and snowballs along with their insults. In the confusion that followed, the soldiers' guns barked, and when the smoke cleared, five Bostonians were dead or fatally wounded. Contrary to popular belief, no one really knows if the order to "fire" was ever given. Thus ended the Boston Massacre. On the heels of this, in a little- known incident, it was discovered that Ben Franklin had circulated intercepted personal correspondence between England and Governer Thomas Hutchinson. England was infuriated and summoned Franklin to England where he was publicly humiliated during a session of Parliament, I believe. At that point, Franklin's injured pride got the better of him, and England lost an influential ally in the colonies. A short while later, Paul Revere rode through the Massachusetts countryside, bellowing, "The British are coming! The British are coming!" The next morning, farmers and their sons, tradesmen, and poorly trained minutemen lined up behind walls and hedges and faced off against the mightiest army in the world.
*********************************************

Long years passed, and the War finally ended. The rebels with a cause had prevailed, and America was free. The Redcoats sailed back to England, and the "fledgling nation" undertook the building of a new empire.

I hope this helped, and if you're still curious, I'm sure HistoryChannel.com, or .org has some great shows, or books, or something you can look at!
Cheers!

One of the things that American revolted against was the idea of "taxation without representation"--Colonial America was getting taxed, however, they did not have representation from the colonies in the British Parliament, in other words, there was no one to voice their opinions in the British government from the colonies.

The "shot heard 'round the world" was fired in Lexington in 1775 when the British came to confiscate arms and arrest revolutionaries in Concord. So began the first battle on the American Revolution. This was the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was ratified by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

At the Battle of Yorktown (Virginia), 1781, the British had to surrender their main combat fleet to Washington because the British fleet that was supposed to come for help was defeated by the French.

The Treaty of Paris in 1783 gave the US all land east of the Mississippi & south of the Great Lakes--it was the peace treaty between the US and Britain.
