Immediate family - parents, grandparents, siblings Extended family - aunts, uncles, cousins, sometimes great aunts and uncles Close friends - those who you are truly close to and play an important part in your life Acquaintances - people you see rarely, have not much in common with, but may through an association of some sort (work, neighbours, etc.) Usually for a wedding, you just have to draw the lines somewhere, depending upon finances, space, etc. If you are lucky to be so close to so many cousins, then you may want them to have precedence over some of your friends. For our wedding, I invited only cousins I was closest to - even some that were second or third cousins over first cousins, simply because we were closer emotionally, within the family. Age was also a factor there as well - though I invited all the aunts/uncles, I didn't invite the older cousins which I didn't know well. Good luck with the lists - I know it's hard...

I don't know about a "definition", but a description would be someone who is more like a member of the family than not - someone who might share personal family information or be trusted wtih family business. Typically this would be someone who would have a key to the house, and come look after the kids if something happened to the parents, say, someone who might watch the house while the family was away.
