On December 20, during a congressional recess, Bush attached a presidential “signing statement”--which gives the president the right to modify, “interpret” or even nullify portions of a law--to the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006.

Originally, the law contained a provision prohibiting the opening of first-class mail without a warrant. But in the signing statement, Bush said the law’s restrictions should be relaxed. “The executive branch shall construe [the law]...in a manner consistent, to the maximum extent permissible, with the need to conduct searches in exigent circumstances, such as to protect human life and safety against hazardous materials, and the need for physical searches specifically authorized by law for foreign intelligence collection,” the statement reads.

In other words, Bush has cleared the way for the government to go snooping.

Yes I do believe it is an infringement of our rights. Many people will say "Well I've got nothing to hide, let them read my mail." This is the same thing we portrayed those evil Nazis and Communists doing over and over in movies and on TV. But now somehow it is acceptable????!! What happens when conservatives have to go up against a president that they don't like. That president will be able to search their mail because they might be a threat to national security. It's funny, they preach about spreading freedom abroad but now I don't even have the freedom to send mail in this country. This is complete doublespeak. (If you don't know what that means, read 1984)

Where have you been that you just woke up to this? It's a law thats always been on the books since way back in the WW1 era that says if you are a suspected terrorist/enemy they can look at your mail. It's been done countless times in the past presidencies and will continue. If you aren't fellowshipping with the terrorists you're safe. Oh by the way, the federal gov. is now the Democrats.

the president does not have the authority to order such searches, only the Congress does unless it is in the interest of National Security
then everyone has permission to pry with recourse from the law

Thank Franklin Rooseveldt for this little tidbit

He's not - President Bush saying he has certain powers is much different than actually having them.

Be that as it may - the Bush administration has frequently sought to expand government rights to invade personal privacy, and his statements about the mail fall into that category.

So you don't receive a bomb the next time you open a box... Or for a terrorist not to have the options of sending a bomb piece by piece
