I go to both stores. In their toy section for dogs they sell different items and I go depending on what I'm looking for. I go to Petsmart for training. I have both Petsmart Pet card and Petco card.
I tend to shop at Petsmart more because I'm there once a week for dog training and I usually stock up when I'm there on food items. On toys I buy at Petco more because they have a wide variety of Plush toys that my dog loves.

Petco & Petsmart are both within a block of each other where I live. I like Petco because it is cleaner and newer. The prices seemed a little lower too.
However I noticed one has things the other doesnt have so I get some things at one and some at the other. I have 4 dogs so I do end up going a lot.

I personally prefer PetSmart. I have been to PetCo. The sales people at PetSmart are much more educated and compassionate about animals. PetCo. seems to hire young kids just looking to make a buck.

I have to sat Petsmart because all of the animals I have gotten from Petco have been sick or dying. Petsmart has better living conditions and it is bigger.

Petsmart used to be sooo great, but lately I have noticed their prices jump through the roof! I get more for my money at Petco.

I go to PetSmart, because the PetCos near me tend to not be as clean - the floors are dirty and it just doesn't look like the people there take as good a care of the store... which makes me suspect the care that they take of the animals.

One company really isn't better than the other. You can see by the varying answers here. A friend of the family has worked at both and he doesn't even have an opinion about it. Shop where you are satisfied with the prices and the quality of animal care. A lot of it has to do with the staff and individual leadership in each store.

Petsmart, mainly bcuz Mobile doesn't have a petco, and i've never been

I prefer Petco, but unfortunatly I moved and my new town just has a Petsmart and Pet Warehouse. :-(

I think both stores take horrible care of their animals. Petco is definitely dirtier! They're both torture chambers if you ask me (as far as the rodents and reptiles go at least). Just last month I went to Petco and saw two dead baby bearded dragons and one that was about to die. They just take really bad care of their animals. I feel sorry for them. Those managers get a piece of my mind! So, both stores are bad and I order everything online and would never dream of purchasing any animals from them.
