Scotts wear kilts, and back in the medievil days men wore tights.
The romans also wore toga's and their armors were skirted at the bottoms for better movement. So in history there are many instances where men wore skirts or dress type clothing.

Today though you might look alittle out of place. Just go with what feels right for you though. Just remember that society is a harsh judge of such behavior.

Truthfully? Because dresses and skirts have become the expected, accepted dress for women. Kilts, which in essence ARE skirts, are worn only by males in traditional Scottish dress, but, watch the reaction of society in general when a male wears a kilt on a daily basis.....
Someone else said "cross dressing"...that is now the label applied to males who wear dresses/skirts...or any type of apparel that is considered part of the feminine domain.
No one says you "can't", its a personal decision.

Ahhh but he can.... see these guys in skirts and note they look like guys and obviously NOT cross dressing. http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/22064674/383259086 You and society will eventually learn why men have worn skirts far longer throughout time than women for a good reason... no freakin crotch binding inseams plus there is total freedom of movement if short and cooler than any shorts. The best of all...chicks find a guy in a skirt "intriguing" ... they know he isn't sexist, homophobic or sexually insecure like many guys. They know a skirt won't make you gay... it take a real man to wear one before they are vogue again...

As unfair as it is, perception is reality. And, unfortunately you can't pick someones perception for them. So, you have to think about how you want to be perceived (and don't pretend you don't care) and then weigh that out. If you are a guy who is interested in cross dressing, there is nothing wrong with that. To be honest, I just assume hang out in my bikini all day. The good news is that we've come a long way in the last 20 years and in 10 more, no one might even bat an eye if they saw you wearing a dress. That said, I'd appeal to the major fashion designers before I fought that battle on my own.

Of course you can wear that in public! Are there laws against such things? There aren't any here!!!

The local schools would send you home, as your attire would be a distraction.

If you're asking why such attire draws criticism... well, what you wear gives people clues on how to interact with you! You already know this -- otherwise, why would you bother wearing the skirt? If you wear "A" type of clothes, then expect "A" type of reactions!!!

The traditional Scottish kilt is a skirt.

Also, you can wear whatever you want, as far as I'm concerned. And if you decide to wear a skirt or dress, more power to you!

If you get harped about it, I suggest you come out to San Francisco. Then you can find tons of people to go shopping with!

A tartan skirt is regular part of Scottish outfit, kilt is the name. And if you are willing to wax your legs on a regular basis, you might try wearing a dress in public (but I think Ms Doubtfire did it first)

He can ... as long as it goes down to the ankles ... like some Tibetan and Nepali clothes... in fact, in a cold climate that would be preferable even to trousers... because you can wear thermals underneath to the ankle, and be warm ....men in "skirts" look really nice.

When I was in India, I saw a man looking super-spiff in a black shirt and a black (sarong) which was worn wrapped around his waist and tucked in, which is the way to do it. When you go to a country like that, you become accustomed to clothes like that very quickly .. and wonder why men in other countries don't do the same.......to my way of thinking, short skirts look ugly on everyone including women, and look (and are) chilly besides.... I think that is why so many women wear trousers... I don't think people who wear short clothes know how cold they really are ... you can become accustomed to being cold and no longer notice it.

I think long garments are best!

You can - just be prepared to get a lot of flak. Some of the other answers are kind of funny. If a guy wears something feminine, he's a crossdresser and/or gay, but if woman wears "menswear", she is progressive. The hangups in this society are too funny.
