I used to be in the military. I lived with a few hundred strangers. My room in the barracks was the first room on the right of the main lobby. The four of us had a rule. Always keep the door open and enough cold beers in the fridge for everyone. We got to know everyone pretty quick. Our room was the squadron lounge after a few weeks. I loved it. I miss that.
I now live in a very shy neighborhood. Driving me crazy.

I was "asked" to live with several strangers once, and they fit the description of strange down to a "t". Over time though, while remaining "strange" we became valued acquaintances...never friends...but passable casual conversationalists.

Yes for over a year, this person was such a mystery to everyone that knew him that even though we were his friends, he was still a stranger.
